Rohypnol

Have you ever wondered what "roofies" are and how they affect people? Have you ever been worried that someone has slipped something into your drink that you didn't know about? To learn more about the illegal drug Rohypnol, read on.

What is Rohypnol?

Rohypnol is a sedative-hypnotic drug which can also be used as a pre-anesthetic medication. Asia, Europe, Columbia, and other South American countries use Rohypnol as a prescription drug. It cannot be made, sold, or prescribed legally in the United States. Importation of Rohypnol was made illegal in March of 1996 by Customs Services.

Scientifically, Rohypnol is in the same family as Valium; however, it is approximately ten times stronger than Valium. It is considered one of the date rape drugs.

What are the uses of Rohypnol?

Rohypnol is a small, 2-milligram tablet that is distributed most often in clear, bubble packaging. It is equally effective when it is used alone or with other substances. Rohypnol can be combined with alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and heroin. When accompanied with these drugs, Rohypnol produces a quick and strong high.

When Rohypnol is taken alone it produces little chance of death, but when it is mixed with other substances, such as alcohol, it can be fatal. The combination can cause the central nervous system to be depressed and the body can forget to do basic functions, like breathe.

Rohypnol is an addictive substance that can cause physical dependence. Addiction to and withdrawal from Rohypnol are increasing concerns.

What are the effects after a person has ingested Rohypnol?

If you are suddenly very tired or really drunk and you know know why because you haven't had that much to drink, you may have been drugged.

The effects of Rohypnol begin within 30 minutes following ingestion and can last as long as 24 hours. Rohypnol has an amnesia effect that prevents people from remembering anything about the time period following the ingestion of the drug, including how and why they took it. People who have taken Rohypnol are completely conscious, awake, and fully aware of what they are doing at the time. The next day, however, they can have no recollection of what happened.

Rohypnol acts in a way that releases people's inhibitions and causes them to behave in ways that are out of the ordinary for that person.

Physical signs of Rohypnol use:

  • Lack of muscle coordination
  • Muscle relaxation
  • Slurred speech
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Swaying
  • Restlessness
  • Aggressiveness
  • Hallucinations
  • Decreased blood pressure
How can I protect myself from getting drugged?

Don't leave your drink unattended
Only drink from un-opened bottles or cans or drinks that you have prepared yourself
Avoid "gimp drinks" such as punch bowls or containers that are passed around.
Party with friends. If you come together, leave together.

Can I be tested for Rohypnol?

Testing for Rohypnol is possible for people who think they may have had it added to their drink or may have ingested it in some other manner without their consent. The testing can be done up to 72 hours from the time of ingestion. If you would like to receive testing call Hartshorn Health Services at (970) 491-1721. If you would like more information please call the Center for Drug and Alcohol Education at (970) 491-1724.
