Individual Therapy: The University Counseling Center provides short term, intermittent therapy for students struggling with a variety of personal issues. Academic concerns, relationship concerns, low self-esteem, feelings of hopelessness, disordered eating, sexual identity concerns, multicultural issues, and anxiety are just some of the issues that can be addressed confidentially in therapy. Up to five sessions of therapy per semester may incur no extra charges (if other limits have not yet been met).
Couples and Family Therapy: The University Counseling Center provides therapy for couples and in some cases for families, when at least one member of the couple/family is an eligible CSU student. Healthy communication, mutual regard and expectations are common themes. As with individual therapy, a short term therapeutic model is followed and up to five sessions per term may incur at no extra charge.
Group Treatment: Many of the personal issues we face are linked to our past and current relationships. Specifically, experiences in these relationships can impact the way we feel about ourselves, others, and the world. In addition, problems we experience, such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and grief/loss can impact the ways that we relate to others. There are no limits and no extra charges for participation in group therapy.
Group treatment provides us a chance to meet with 6-8 people like ourselves who are struggling in similar ways, and to learn new ways of dealing with our issues in the context of relationships. Group treatment offers multiple perspectives, greater opportunities for feedback and support, and a richer perspective for dealing with many types of people in a way that individual therapy cannot provide.
Emergency Services: The University Counseling Center staff is available for crisis situations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. During office hours, call 491-6053 or come by C36 Clark to speak with our on-call counselors.
After office hours, call 491-7111 and ask to speak with a UCC counselor. One of our counselors will return your call shortly. There is no charge for this service.
Stress Management Program: The Stress Management Program (SMP) enables students to learn the skills necessary to relieve the negative consequences of stress.
Through various relaxation techniques, students can learn to identify stressors and relax their mind and body. The SMP provides information and practice for these relaxation techniques. There are no limits and no extra charges for SMP sessions. Students may purchase a CD of guided techniques for $5.
Additional Information: All counseling is confidential. No information is released to anyone without the student’s written consent, except in cases required by law (e.g., danger to self or others, suspicions of child abuse or neglect). If you would like to find out if you could benefit from therapy or you would like to schedule an initial assessment, please come to the UCC at C-36 Clark during business hours.
If you have additional questions about the University Counseling Center, please call 491-6053 during business hours, or stop by the University Counseling Center, located in C36 Clark Building.
